Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) Temporary Laboratory Assistant position for the Department of Integrative Biology, PISCO program at Oregon State University (OSU). The appointee will assist professors, technicians, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students in research on ecosystem dynamics of rocky reef communities and the near shore ocean along the West Coast. Responsibilities include laboratory, intertidal, and offshore field work. Shore and lab work include: water sample processing, chlorophyll-a analysis of water samples; data entry; making sample devices; maintaining field equipment; preparing field collectors; assisting with instrument calibrations, surveys of intertidal communities; biodiversity and abundance. Offshore work includes deployment, recovery, and maintenance of moorings, water sampling and sample processing, and construction of mooring components as needed. This position requires working early mornings, long hours in the field and occasional weekends, multiple overnight trips, the ability to do technical hiking with a heavy load, and resistance to seasickness. The College of Science comprises 16 academic departments and programs that offer 17 disciplinary degrees, containing 45 options among them, as well as 11 pre-professional options. Science is one of the university's largest academic units with approximately 300 faculty, 465 graduate students, 2,796 undergraduate students, and 100 management service and classified personnel. Additionally, these faculty and students collaborate in three of the university's world-class research centers, namely the Linus Pauling Institute, the Environmental Health Sciences Center, and the Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing. The College supports seven partnerships bring science and mathematics education to the teachers, students, and parents in Oregon's K-12 community. The total annual instructional and research budget supporting the College of Science is approximately $54,000,000. Position Duties 70% Field Work: Maintains and monitors current field experiments; identifies and surveys biodiverse intertidal species; collects water samples; interacts with public as needed; assists professors, post-docs, technicians, and graduate students with field research. 30% Lab Work: Prepares for fieldwork; assists in calibration of equipment; processes samples collected from the field sites; chlorophyll-a and nutrient analysis; microscope work; fabricate field equipment; coordinate as appropriate with field teams and collaborating agencies. Majority of work will be done in assigned lab space at OSU in the Department of Integrative Biology, Cordley Hall, or at various sites along the Oregon and Northern California coasts. Duties require periodic overnight stays at coast housing during periods of intensive sampling, weekend work, and working early morning hours. Activities will require conducting strenuous fieldwork and hiking along rocky shores, dodging waves, and carrying heavy equipment and may include working on a ship in rough seas. Lifting, carrying, pulling and pushing of backpack and field tools up to 50 lbs. Job requires traversing rough terrain, and working in adverse weather conditions. Typical hours when in the field require this position to wake by 03:00am and work by 04:00am.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications Training or experience demonstrating the a) knowledge of basic laboratory techniques; b) knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, and materials; c) knowledge of basic math; d) ability to follow formulas accurately; e) ability to handle, package, and store laboratory specimens and materials; f) ability to operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment; g) ability to learn routing testing methods, procedures, and techniques; h) ability to keep accurate records in conformance with laboratory procedures; and i) ability to follow written and verbal instructions. High school courses, in chemistry, biology, mathematics, or any course which included laboratory work, are considered qualifying. Additional Required Qualifications -Must be able to commit to working full "field season schedule" typically March-September, some weekends and holidays depending on field schedule. -A proven ability to be self-motivated and to work both in a team setting and independently. -Previous fieldwork experience. -Ability to discuss scientific findings and convey oceanographic research to the public via presentations. -This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030. Preferred (Special) Qualifications -B.Sc. or B.A. in Biological Sciences, preference given to Marine background. -Strong attention to detail. -First Aid and CPR certification. -Fieldwork experience, preferably in a rocky intertidal environment. -Prior experience working offshore on research vessels during inclement weather. -Ability to function and follow direction during possible seasickness. -Prior experience with scientific laboratory techniques. -Experience with power and manual tools. -Proficiency and experience with basic computer software programs, Word, Excel, and other Microsoft applications. -A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
