Title: Fisheries Technician 1: Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery Crew Member (19-1163) Location: Salkum, WA (98582) Anticipated Start Date: September 23, 2019 Position Type: Temporary (3 months or less), Hourly/Non-Exempt Benefits Eligible: No | www.psmfc.org/benefits Salary Target: $15.00-$17.00/hour, DOE Job Number: 19-1163 How to Apply: Online at www.psmfc.org/careers Closing Date: September 1, 2019 at Midnight PST Position/Project Specifics: Please note - This is a temporary position starting September 23, 2019 and ending by December 13, 2019 The successful candidate will be working with Tacoma Public Utilities Staff at the adult sorting facility and the Mayfield Downstream Juvenile Collector located at the Cowlitz River Hydroelectric Project near Salkum, Washington. The Adult Sorting Facility tasks include sorting adult salmon and steelhead at the top of the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery fish ladder by species, marks and tags, and hatchery needs following a detailed handling protocol. The candidate should be able to identify adult salmon and steelhead, and have the ability to work in a fast paced, wet environment and in all weather conditions. The Juvenile Collector tasks include enumerating juvenile salmon and trout, identifying the species, looking for marks and tags, and coded wire tagging the fish. It is preferred that the candidate have juvenile salmon and steelhead identification experience, but is not required. These positions will be responsible for collecting essential trapping information and entering accurate data into an Access database. These positions will also be required to work weekends and some holidays. This job provides ideal experience for those pursuing a career in aquatic and fisheries sciences. The work takes place in a beautiful setting on one of Washington State's most popular river destinations. ** This position requires a valid driver's license and all offers of employment will be contingent upon passing a driving record check. **


Requirements:

At the lower end of the range, candidates must present six months of General Experience* OR one year of education above the high school level that included at least six semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses. An equivalent combination of experience and education is also qualifying. At the upper end of the range, candidates must present one year of Specialized Experience** OR a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with a major or at least 24 semester hours of coursework in any combination of scientific or technical courses. An equivalent combination of experience and education is also qualifying. A B.S. in Fisheries Science or Related Major is preferred but not required. A high school diploma is required for this position. *General Experience is (1) any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with biological sciences or the processes of the biological sciences. **Specialized Experience is experience that equips the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position being filled.
