Description:

Columbia Basin Research, Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, UW has an outstanding opportunity for a Database Manager ! The Database Manager works within a small CBR team of scientists, web designers, and statistical/programming analysts to build and maintain functional tools and databases. The employee is responsible for all database administration, including databases that can be queried through public online analytical processing tools, and databases used for in-house research studies and product development. The employee also collaborates frequently with public entities, including researchers, database managers, resource managers in state, federal and non-governmental organizations, and stakeholders. RESPONSIBILITIES: Database Administration • Design and implement database architectures to integrate relevant datasets. • Ensure in-house data mirror primary data sources. • Design and implement effective QA/QC procedures. • Tune database resource use and query performance. • Create effective SQL to deliver accurate, functional query results. • Advise on the acquisition and specifications of computing resources. • Document database architecture, programs, and procedures. Regional Outreach • Ensure access to critical data through professional relationships with primary sources. • Work with regional partners to develop data and research products. • Provide feedback to primary sources on dataflow and QA/QC issues. Programming • Discover and acquire relevant fisheries and environmental datasets. • Assist with machine-learning projects. • Obtain and disseminate appropriate metadata for each primary source. • Process data to appropriate formats and import to in-house databases. • Develop and maintain procedures to cluster data into functional groups. • Perform self-directed data exploration to develop and improve products. Collaboration • Provide custom, curated, datasets as requested by team members and the public. • Assists with the preparation of progress reports and research papers. • Document all analyses, programs, processes, and procedures. • Advise on the availability and utility of data for various projects. • Assist Web Computing Specialist with data and tool publication


Requirements:

One year of experience as a Systems Analyst/Programmer II OR a Bachelor's Degree in computer science or a job related area OR equivalent education/experience. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: • Experience in database administration of PostgreSQL database management systems. • Working knowledge of at least one programming language; e.g., Perl, Python. • Working knowledge of at least one scripting language; e.g., bash, sed, awk. • Ability to establish and maintain positive, ethical, and professional interpersonal relationships. DESIRED: • Interest in supporting the scientific process leading to insights and understanding of natural resources and ecological processes to help with conservation, fishery management, research, and collaboration with communities. • Experience with Git/GitHub or other version control systems. • Experience with R. • Experience with machine learning techniques
