Description:

Essential Functions: Lead Captain will crew the University's passenger vessel D. J. Angus located in Grand Haven, MI. Work hours will vary depending on the vessel schedule and crew rotation. Vessel season runs 1 April -31 Oct. The vessel operates approx. 350 hrs. per season. Required Qualification's: Individual must be able to perform able seaman and engineer duties which include but are not limited to general ship's maintenance, line handling, operation of deck machinery, general troubleshooting and maintenance of diesel engines and machinery, standing watch and act as relief mate. Duties also include assisting scientists with handling, rigging, and operation of research equipment, and working with students on educational cruises. Must be able to work in all types of inclement weather. Must be able to crouch and stoop to get into areas with restricted headroom, to climb ladders and to lift and carry 50-75 lbs. Exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially hazardous equipment. May involve travel to multiple locations and extended stays out of home location, long hours and weekend duties. Will be expected to perform record keeping and help manage ship's stores. Individual must have a minimum of five years' experience aboard vessels. Required to participate in Random Drug Testing Program and complete CPR/First Aid certification, employer provided. Position: Education & Research Vessel Captain: Grand Valley State University Terms: Part time, hourly employee with 12-month appointment Location: Robert B. Annis Water Resources Institute, Muskegon, Michigan Duties: Will operate the University's 45-foot passenger/research vessel D. J. Angus located in Grand Haven, MI, as well as a 65-foot passenger vessel located in Muskegon MI. Work hours will vary depending on the vessel schedule. Vessel season runs 1 April -31 Oct. The vessel operates approx. 400hrs per season. Skills: Required to have at least a 100-ton Masters License, TWIC and FCC Marine Radio Operators Permit (MP), and demonstrated experience operating research or passenger vessels and working with the general public and/or students.
