Description: Georgia Sea Grant and the UGA Marine Extension Service are seeking a person with knowledge in city and county government, global environmental issues, and strong communication skills to assist a local government outreach coordinator in increasing the resiliency of coastal communities and reducing their vulnerability to flooding and other coastal hazards. The overall goal of Sea Grant efforts on the GA coast is to increase economic vitality and quality of life while preserving the services provided by natural coastal ecosystems. It is hoped that increased education and awareness of the potential impacts of coastal hazards to infrastructure, society and economies will encourage incorporation of sustainable policies and strategies.
GA Sea Grant is one of 33 state programs within the National Sea Grant program and is based at the University of Georgia in Athens. The position will be housed at the UGA Marine Extension Services Marine Advisory building in Brunswick, GA. Sea Grant and Marine Extension engage university expertise to solve important problems identified by coastal stakeholders and then deliver results and solutions to Georgia citizens, governments, and businesses.
The successful candidate will be familiar with coastal issues, have experience with local planning and zoning, municipal infrastructure and resource management, and have the ability to work collaborating among various academic, governmental and non-governmental organizations. Good organization and communications skills are a must, as is the ability to work independently.
The primary function of this position is to assist the SG/Marex local government coordinator in reducing the vulnerability of coastal communities to coastal hazards. More specifically, position responsibilities would include 1) understanding climate change, coastal processes, coastal hazards, and community resiliency in coastal Georgia, 2) assisting SG/Marex staff in increasing awareness and encouraging development of community risk assessments, adaptation strategies, and implementation of incremental steps that communities can take to become more resilient to hazards, 3) when requested, assist, with supervision, local governments in developing hazard and flood adaptation planning and implementation, and 4) working to create a stronger identify for SG/Marex and UGA coastal programs.
Requirements:
Completion of a Bachelor's degree or four years of relevant work experience .

- Minimum 1 year experience in teaching Environmental Education.
- Minimum 1 year experience providing care to animals in an educational or rehabilitation setting.
- Valid driver's license.
Ability to work independently as well as within a team. Experience with animal handling and care. Experience and knowledge in the planning and coordinating of youth education programs. Ability to provide programmatic and facilitation support for the environmental education program. Willingness to obtain high ropes facilitation training. Fundamental knowledge of computers and applications. Ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults. Broad knowledge of the natural environment and comfort working outdoors.
Must be able to work in adverse physical and weather conditions. Must be able to walk at least 4 miles daily. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Wildlife Resources, Education, Natural Science, Environmental Education, Biology, Outdoor Education, or related fields is preferred.
Master's degree preferred.
