Support Scientist (Support for NPP/JPSS VIIRS Vegetation Index EDR Algorithm) NOAA/NESDIS/STAR College Park, MD I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG) (www.imsg.com), a science and technical company supporting U.S. Federal Government, located in Rockville, Maryland is currently seeking to hire a Support Scientist to join our team efforts to support NOAA/NESDIS/Center for Satellite Applications Research (STAR). IMSG supports STAR in applied science research and development efforts in a semi-research and semi-operational working environment along with U.S. government scientists, visiting scientists, and other contractors. This task is to provide support for NPP/JPSS VIIRS Vegetation Index EDR algorithm.
Requirements:
General Requirements/Duties: Support the SNPP Vegetation Index EDR operational product during the long term monitoring period. Support development and implementation of the Vegetation Index Enterprise Algorithm. Support long term product monitoring of the JPSS1 Vegetation Index EDR. Major activities include but not limited to the following: • Calibration and Validation (Cal/Val) on S-NPP and JPSS1 VI EDR • Support testing and implementation of the Vegetation Index Enterprise Algorithm • Investigation, assessment, calibration, validation, and maintenance of the VI-EDR algorithm • Performance and Support of algorithm and data product testing • Sensor and product long term monitoring, science maintenance and support of anomaly investigations and mitigation activities • Support Algorithm change and approval process • Support VIIRS VI derived products (GVF, LAI, etc) • Keep Vegetation Index EDR product documentation updated. Qualifications: • Self-motivated scientist with M.S. degree in physical sciences • Strong programming background using C, C++, FORTRAN 90, and IDL • Experience working with HDF-4/5 and NetCDF data formats • Experience working with MODIS, AVHRR, Landsat/ETM+ and other comparable satellite imagery. • Understanding the retrieval of Vegetation Indices from satellite data. • Analyze calibration data, evaluate instrument performance, identify potential issues and risks, and recommend the course of actions to mitigate the risks. • Familiarity with Software Configuration Management (Subversion). • Team-work oriented; strong communication skills (oral and written) • Proven R&D capability with peer reviewed publications in relevant subjects (highly preferred) • Proficiency and experience with ADL (Algorithm Development Library) is highly desirable for carrying out algorithm update and validation process in a timely manner. • Java web programming is a plus To Apply: Please apply directly to our career portal: https://careers-imsg.icims.com (NOA1608 Support Scientist: VIIRS_VI_EDR) Please submit your resume, the contact information for three (3) references and a cover letter explaining how your qualifications meet the requirements of the position IMSG offers an outstanding overall Benefit Package including company paid leave, medical, dental, vision, and 401K.
