The Marine Explorers Summer Camp Counselor delivers engaging and coastal ocean science
programs in an outdoor setting for the Marine Explorers Summer Camp, supervises campers
during all camp activities and transports camp participants from our main office on Crissy Field
to sites all around the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a full-time, temporary position through
the Greater Farallones Association and requires a commitment to 40 hours a week for all eight
weeks of summer camp. The Marine Explorers Summer Camp will take place 9 am-5 pm
Monday through Friday between the dates of June 5th and August 11th, 2017 with a two week
break during July 1st-16th.
Requirements:
Summer Camp Counselor Position Responsibilities
? Assists fellow counselors with supervision of 8-12 year old camp participants in an
outdoor setting, planning educational and recreational free time activities, and
transporting students to and from field trip sites, including but not limited to the Marin
Headlands, Bodega Bay, Half Moon Bay, and Santa Cruz.
? Leads campers through hands on activities, presentations, field trips and experiments.
? Delivers marine science lesson plans including programs focused on tidepool exploration,
crabs, squid, seabirds, sharks, marine mammals, salmon, plankton, deep-sea corals and
ocean acidification to students in alignment with the Next Generation Science Standards.
? Ensures participants are safe (properly hydrated, playing areas are free of hazards, proper
site safety briefings for campers, etc.); perform headcounts of participants throughout the
day.
? Maintains a well-organized system to keep attendance each day and track each camper’s
medical conditions as well as photo release restrictions.
? Keeps track of supplies for camp and convey any camp needs to the Camp Coordinator.
? Interacts and communicates with parents/guardians during drop-off and pick-up times.
? Provides a safe, fun, supportive and friendly environment throughout all programs and
field trips. Properly handles live marine organisms and cares for all education materials.
? Carries and keeps track of activity supplies on site and during field trips.
? Participates in assigned daily set-up and clean-up of the camp area.
? Must possess a considerable ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous
working relationships with co-workers, parents and students.
Education:
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in environmental education, biology, marine science, or related
field.
Qualifications
? Ability to skillfully instruct others and to work with persons from diverse backgrounds,
including urban youth. Experience in teaching marine science or a related field to K-12
students from diverse backgrounds.
? Knowledge of, and broad interest in, oceans and marine science, including key ocean
organisms, coastal ecosystems, and coastal stewardship.
? Experience teaching students in an outdoor setting preferred.
? Ability to work as a team member; must be outgoing, patient, energetic and enthusiastic;
must have good communication and interpersonal skills.
? Ability to adjust quickly to changing priorities and manage tasks in a fast-paced
environment.
? Must have reliable personal transportation, a valid California driver license and a clean
driving record.
? Must be willing to pass a background check and Defensive Driving Course.
? Must be First Aid and CPR certified.
? Must be able to lift 50 lbs as this position sometimes requires transporting education
materials.
