Description:

This is a one-year term position, with possible extensions, depending on need, continued funding, and job performance. There is also the possibility of becoming regular, full time. This term position supports the operation of MBARI's fleet of submersible vehicles in a reliable and effective manner. Reporting to the ROV/MARS Operations Manager, the incumbent will fill temporary personnel resource gaps, to operate and maintain multiple submersible platform types. Primary assignment will be as an ROV Pilot/Technician on ROV Ventana, but may also include support of ROV Doc Ricketts, LRAUV, Dorado AUV and other autonomous assets. The MBARI submersible programs are focused on both the successful accomplishment of science mission objectives and on the development of new technology to advance ocean science. The incumbent effectively pilots and conducts operations of the ROV/AUV to facilitate the safe and timely completion of the defined tasks for the Chief Scientist. They will assist in the design, development, testing, and at-sea operations and must have seagoing skills that enable them to launch, recover, track and maintain submersible assets at sea. The incumbent will also maintain the ROV/AUV to ensure the reliable operation in conjunction with other ROV pilots and AUV engineers. Maintenance task run a full spectrum including mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, fiber optic, and electronic systems. Requirements:

Minimum of an Associate's degree, or equivalent, in a relevant engineering field plus relevant experience in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, fiber optic and electronic systems. The equivalent of 1-3 years of experience piloting and maintaining medium to full size electro-hydraulic work class ROV's is preferred. Must be computer literate and proficient in word processing and spreadsheets. Use of design software programs (OrCAD, Solidworks) is preferred. The position requires the willingness and ability to work in a hazardous marine environment on a daily basis or for up to 10 days at sea at a time. Ability to lift 35 lbs. Must be able to work well as part of a team, independently and with diverse groups of people. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required.
