Marine Science Education Summer Internship

Back to all Internships
12-Feb-18 08:46 AM
URL: https://www.disl.org/dhp/internship-opportunities
Affiliation: non-MATE
Company / Organization: Discovery Hall Programs (DHP)
City: Mobile, Alabama
Application Deadline: 01-Apr-18
Duration: 5/30/18 - 8/1/18
Description:

WHAT

Discovery Hall Programs for Education & Outreach has a PAID summer internship position available for an undergraduate student (junior, senior) or recent graduate from groups under-represented in marine science or environmental education.

WHERE

The internship is at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, located on a barrier island, ~45 min south of Mobile, Alabama.   Room, board and a stipend are provided.  Dauphin Island is a busy place during the summer with K-12 and undergraduate education programs, summer colloquia and an active research program.

WHEN

Internship dates are May 30  - Aug. 1, 2018.  Interns work ~40 hr / week, but hours are flexible and include some nights and weekends.

WHY

This internship position is designed to provide an introduction to and hands-on work experience in environmental education by working with a variety of audiences (K-12 students, teachers, general public) and alongside environmental educators.  Interns learn by doing and assist in program logistics, preparation, teaching, and all activities, including field trips.  Interns also learn a great deal about Gulf of Mexico organisms and their habitats and have opportunities to network with Sea Lab scientists, visiting faculty, and educators.

WHO

Candidates should be interested in marine science and environmental education, and enjoy working with people, including children.  Our programs focus on outdoor activities, so interns should be comfortable working outside in Alabama’s summer heat and humidity and working in and around the water.  A clean driving record, background check and drug test are required.
